Distance education or Distance Learning, is the education of students who may not always present at a college or school. In a short form – “Teacher and Learner always separated in both Distance and Time.

Distance education, also known as online learning, has been gaining popularity in recent years as an alternative to traditional classroom-based education. The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the growth of online learning, with many educational institutions adopting online teaching and learning methods to keep students engaged while maintaining social distancing measures.

Today Distance Education is completely in the form of Distance Learning and Traditional classroom instructions (Like Hybrid model). Online virtual learning model is also playing a vital role in Distance Education.

Current State of Distance Education In Telangana State

Telangana has a long tradition of providing distance education, with the state’s first open university, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, being established in 1982. Since then, several other universities and institutions in the state have started offering distance education programs.

Currently, there are several universities and institutions in Telangana that offer distance education programs in a wide range of fields, including arts, science, commerce, management, and engineering. Some of the most popular distance education programs in the state include MBA, MCA, B.Ed, and BBA.

Ambedkar Open University – BRAOU For Distance Education

Established on August 26th, 1982 through the A.P. State Legislature’s enactment of the APOU Act 1982, the University was initially known as Andhra Pradesh Open University. In 1991, the Government of Andhra Pradesh renamed the University to Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Open University. As the first of its kind in India, the University’s establishment marked a period of affirmative action by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, providing higher education opportunities to all sections of society to meet their changing individual and social needs. All programs offered by the University are recognized by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, and its motto is “EDUCATION FOR ALL.”

Telangana State Open School Society (TOSS) – Distance Education for S.S.C and Intermediate levels.

Telangana Open School Society (TOSS) is an initiative taken by the Telangana State Government to provide education to all students, especially those who could not complete their education through the regular mode. The aim of the society is to provide flexible, innovative, and need-based learning opportunities to students.

The Telangana Open School Society was established in 1991, and since then, it has been providing education to thousands of students across the state. The society has been recognized by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and is governed by the State Board of Secondary Education (SBSE) and the State Government of Telangana.

Kakatiya University for Distance Education

Kakatiya University offers distance education programs through the School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education (SDLCE). The SDLCE was established in 1988 with the aim of providing higher education opportunities to students who could not attend traditional classroom-based programs.
