నిజాం నిరంకుశత్వం రాజ్యమేలుతున్న కాలంలో వెనుకబడిన కులాల ప్రజలు దొరల ఇళ్ళల్లో, పొలాల్లో వెట్టిచాకిరీ చేస్తూ ఉండేవారు. ప్రజలు ఎనలేని పన్నుల భారంతో నిలువనీడ లేకుండా బ్రతుకుతున్న సందర్భాలెన్నో ఉండేవి. నిజాం రాజ్యంలో జరుగుతున్న అకృత్యాలను ఎదుర్కొనడానికి ఊరూరా వాడవాడలా ఆంధ్రమహాసభ పేరుతో ప్రజలను చైతన్యం చేస్తున్న కమ్యూనిస్టు పార్టీ భావాల పట్ల ఆకర్షితురాలైన ఐలమ్మ పార్టీ చేపట్టే కార్యక్రమాలలో చురుకుగా పాల్గొనేది.

Chakali Ilamma – A Brave Woman Who Fought Against Landlords

Chityala Ilamma, better known as Chakali Ilamma was born to Mallamma and Sailu in Krishnapuram village of Rayakurthi mandal in Warangal district. She was married to Chityala Narsayya at the age of 11. After marriage, Ilamma’s name became Chityala Ilamma. As a woman belonging to the Rajaka caste professionally, her name has been popularly known as Chakali Ilamma since the days of the Telangana armed struggle. The anti-feudal struggle waged by Ailamma has been hailed as an important event in the Telangana armed peasant struggle.

During the Nizam’s dictatorship, the backward castes used to work in the houses and fields of the aristocracy. There have been instances where people have been living with the burden of innumerable taxes. To fight against the atrocities taking place in the Nizam ruling, Ilamma fascinated the ideas of the communist party and mobilized the people under the name of Andhra Mahasabha. Ilamma played a key role in the armed struggle of the Andhra Mahasabha Communist Party against the Nizam government.

Ilamma and Narsaya were cultivating 40 acres of land belonging to Uttamraju Raghavarao of the Mallampalli family near Palakurthi on lease. Ilamma refused to work on Visunur Deshmukh’s farm and started cultivating independently. Visunur Deshmukh, along with Ramachandra Reddy and local police Patel (Patwari) Veeramaneni Seshagiri Rao, sent Ilamma, her husband and sons, and some other Andhra Mahasabha leaders to jail. But the court’s verdict came against Deshmukh as justice was on Ailamma’s side.

Deshmukh considered it an insult and wanted to retaliate against Ilamma. He then joined with Patwari and registered the land in his name, which Ilamma cultivated and he told his men to reap the harvest. By knowing this, Ilamma, with the help of Andhra Mahasabha activists and party chiefs Bhimreddy Narasimhareddy, Arutla Ramachandra Reddy, Chakilam Yadagiri, Nallu Pratapareddy, Nalla Narasimha, etc., repulsed the attempts of the men sent by Deshmukh, also brought home her crop. With the victory of the land struggle of Ilamma, the communists attacked the house of the Palakurthi Dhora and distributed all the grain to the people. Also, 90 acres of land belonging to Dhora was also distributed to the people.

Dhora summoned Ilamma to his border and asked, “what would you do if I killed you at this moment.” The brave woman Ilamma replied, that “if you kill me, the minute my sons will kill you for sure.” The courage she showed was an inspiration for many people, especially the socially lower classes. In every village, the efforts of Ilamma to shape the armed struggle movement are admirable. Ilamma, who secured her land from the hands of Deshmukh and chanted the slogan ‘Dunnevaride Bhoomi,’ stood out as a brave woman in the history of Telangana armed struggle.
