ఈ ఆలయానికి ఆ పేరు రావడం వెనుక పలు కథనాలు ప్రచారంలో ఉన్నాయి. లంకలో జరిగిన రామరావణ యుద్ధంలో లక్ష్మణుడు మూర్చిల్లినపుడు ఆంజనేయుడు సంజీవని పర్వతాన్ని తీసుకొని వెళ్తున్న సమయంలో అందులో నుండి ఒక ముక్క రాలి ఈ కొండలలో పడడం, అది కొండగట్టుగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందడం జరిగిందనే పురాణగాథ ఒకటి ప్రచారంలో కలదు.

కొండగట్టు ఆలయంలో కొలువై ఉన్న అంజన్న. నరసింహస్వామి, ఆంజనేయస్వామి ద్విముఖాలతో దర్శనమిస్తాడు. ఇటువంటి రెండు ముఖాలతో వెలసిన స్వామి ఇక్కడ తప్ప మరెక్కడా లేకపోవడం విశేషం. నరసింహస్వామి విష్ణుమూర్తి అవతార స్వరూపం కాబట్టి ఆ స్వామి చిహ్నాలైన శంఖం, చక్రం ఆంజనేయస్వామి ఇరు బాహువులకి; అదే విధంగా వక్షస్థలంలో శ్రీరామచంద్రుడు, సీతమ్మ వారు ఉండడం ఇక్కడి విశేషం. ఆలయానికి దగ్గర్లో గల సీతమ్మవారి బావిలోని నీళ్లతోనే ప్రతినిత్యం స్వామికి అభిషేకం చేయడం ఇక్కడి ఆనవాయితీగా ఉన్నది.

About five hundred years ago, a herdsman named Singam Sanjeeva from Kodimyala Pargana went to graze his cattle in Kondagattu Gutta and a cow was missing from the herd. Sanjeeva, who was searching for it, was sleeping under a pine tree and realized in the dream of Anjaneyaswami that he came out from the sun and rain in the corundum bushes near him. A cow trail is also said to indicate protection. When Sanjeev opened his eyes and saw a cow, Amitanandabharita showed his devotion to the Lord. When he removed the thorn bushes, he saw a glorious Anjaneya Swami statue with a conch and chakra decoration. It is known from the historical account that Sanjeeva built a small temple for the Lord there. Inscribed stone inscriptions on the southern side of the temple bear witness to this historical narrative. There are also evidences of ancient penance in the caves in the north-east of Delaya.

Interesting Story of Kondagattu Name

There are many stories circulating behind the name of this temple. There is a popular legend that when Lakshmana fainted during the battle of Ramaravana in Lanka, while Anjaneya was carrying Sanjeevani mountain, a piece of rock from it fell in these hills and it became known as Kondagattu.

The Anjanna temple here is situated in a forest area with black rock formations, caves and a variety of flora. Another popular story is that there are big hills around the temple and another small mound is formed on those hills, and the name Kondagattu came from the appearance of Anjaneyaswami on that mound.
